Atalanta was named after the Greek mythological athlete. The club's early years included a merger with rival club Bergamasca in 1920, which also established the nerazzurri kit. Atalanta first reached Serie A in 1937 and enjoyed nearly three decades in the top flight from 1940 to 1969. Under coach Gian Piero Gasperini (2017–2024), the club achieved its best ever league finishes and participated in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
