Production
Ryan Gillis first pitched the idea for StuGo to Disney Television Animation in 2019, drawing from his own college study-abroad experience where students had free time outside of class. Disney gave the project a green light in 2022, and production kicked off the following year. Gillis landed on the title after a Google search, deciding it matched the show’s themes. The series was publicly announced on June 13, 2023.
Titmouse, Inc. handles production, with direction from Hannah Ayoubi, Erica Jones, and Steve Wolfhard. Gillis and Sunil Hall are executive producers, and Craig Lewis serves as story editor. The show leans on episodic storytelling—each episode is meant to work on its own—while still weaving in continuity and world-building. Gillis aimed for humor that comes from knowing the characters well, especially the friction between them as they navigate their situation.
The main voice cast, revealed at the announcement, includes Tania Gunadi, Zosia Mamet, Gabourey Sidibe, Lo Mutuc, Zach Reino, Deborah Baker Jr., and Lorraine Toussaint; Jake Green joined the cast in December 2024. Kristi Reed directed the voice work. Titmouse and Snipple Animation Studios provided animation, with Sam Bosma as art director. The visual style takes cues from the Caribbean and South Florida, but Gillis avoided a glossy, romanticized look by showing buildings worn down by the environment.
Dr. Lullah’s tech stands out from typical mad-scientist gadgets, using plaster, Spanish tile, and art deco details. Mutant designs were inspired by adventure serials like Jonny Quest, Ray Harryhausen’s creations, and Gillis’s own Florida upbringing.
