Loonatics Unleashed

Descendants of Looney Tunes become superheroes in a post-apocalyptic future.

Loonatics Unleashed is an American superhero animated television series produced by Warner Bros. Animation that aired on Kids' WB from 2005 to 2007. It reimagines classic Looney Tunes characters as descendants in a post-apocalyptic setting, blending action with the franchise's irreverent humor. The series was met with fan backlash over its character designs, which later executives cited as a cautionary example.

Plot

The series is set in the year 2772, when a meteor strikes the ocean of the city planet Acmetropolis, knocking it off its axis and releasing supernatural energies that alter the genetic codes of some citizens, granting them special abilities. A mysterious woman named Zadavia assembles six of these affected individuals into a superhero team called the Loonatics, operating from the 134th floor of a large tower. The team members are descendants of classic Looney Tunes characters. Later, Zadavia is revealed to be an alien who used her powers to deflect the meteor from total destruction, and the meteor was actually caused by her brother Optimatus in an attempt to destroy her. In the second season, the tone lightens, more descendants of other Looney Tunes characters appear, and Zadavia becomes a more active participant. Two additional aliens from her home planet, Deuce and Keyboard Man, are introduced. In the season finale, the Loonatics are temporarily joined by a former adversary, and Deuce replaces Optimatus as the main villain.

Main characters

Ace Bunny, descendant of Bugs Bunny, was a stunt rabbit before the meteor. Lexi Bunny, descendant of Lola Bunny, was trying out to be a cheerleader at Acmetropolis University. Danger Duck, descendant of Daffy Duck, worked as a pool boy. Slam Tasmanian, descendant of the Tasmanian Devil, was a fighter in a ring, implied to be a pro wrestler. Tech E. Coyote, descendant of Wile E. Coyote, was a college student at the Acme Institute, implied to have been expelled after a faculty member misused his machine. Rev Runner, descendant of Road Runner, was a delivery boy and inventor.

Production

The series began as a pitch by Christian and Yvon Tremblay under the title The Loonatics, using reinterpretations of classic Looney Tunes characters. President of Warner Bros. The Loonatics were first publicly revealed in February 2005 via a live-action/animated promotional short with early designs and names, including Zadavia originally called Maxima. The angular designs sparked fan ire, leading to a petition with 85,000 signatures demanding changes. Warner Bros. Animation responded that the circulated drawings were preliminary and had been softened. Ace's original planned name Buzz Bunny was likely changed due to a similarly named character and a sex toy. The second season was announced in September 2006, with the show credited for helping Kids' WB become No. 1 in key demographics. The series was not included in the 2007–08 Saturday morning lineup.

In other media

Ace Bunny makes a brief appearance in the New Looney Tunes episode 'One Carroter in Search of an Artist', where Bugs Bunny transforms into Ace after requesting a more current look. In the Teen Titans Go! episode 'Huggbees', a poster of the series appears with a stock scream when Raven asks if someone is rebooting it. Lexi Bunny, Slam Tasmanian, Danger Duck, and Ace Bunny appear in the Animaniacs reboot episode 'Suffragette City'.
