Fantadroms is a Latvian science fiction cartoon from Studio Dauka that began airing in 1985, during the Latvian SSR era. The series contains no spoken dialogue; instead, it tells its stories through pantomime and vocal sounds like grunts, groans, and laughter, making it understandable across different languages. The episode "Salt" won the Lielais Kristaps award for best animation in 1985, and additional episodes were produced on and off until 1995. In the early 1990s, Streamline Pictures considered releasing the show in the United States, but the plan fell through; the exact reasons are not confirmed by reliable sources.
The central character is Indriķis XIII, a yellow shape-shifting robot that usually appears as a cat. He travels through space, settling arguments between other characters or rescuing them from trouble. A key recurring situation is a love triangle: Indriķis loves Receklīte (a flying purple octopus-like alien with a cat face; her name means "clot" in Latvian), while The Rat is in love with Indriķis. Other regular characters include a cow, two human boys, and an amorphous pink blob.
Three episodes—"Takeoff Field of Fantasy", "The Salt", and "The Fire"—were later re-edited into shorter versions. In that release, "Takeoff Field of Fantasy" was retitled "The Laugh".
