The 2005 *Doraemon* anime is the third television adaptation of Fujiko F. Fujio’s manga, following the 1973 and 1979 series. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation, TV Asahi, and ADK Emotions, it debuted on TV Asahi in Japan on April 15, 2005, and now broadcasts in more than fifty countries. In Asia, it is known as the Mizuta Edition, named after Wasabi Mizuta, the voice actor for Doraemon.
As of 2026, the series has aired 892 episodes, multiple holiday specials, and 45 feature films, with a 46th film scheduled for spring 2027. TV Asahi holds the distribution and licensing rights for this series, the previous TV adaptation, and the feature films.
The show has had three English dubs, with a fourth in development. The first dub, licensed by Viz Media for North America and produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment, aired on Disney XD in the United States as *Doraemon: Gadget Cat From the Future* from July 7, 2014, to September 1, 2015, with reruns continuing until 2018. The second dub, licensed by LUK Internacional and produced by Red Angel Media in Hong Kong, ran on Boomerang in the United Kingdom from August 7, 2015, to January 2016. The third dub, licensed by Spacetoon India and produced by EarCandy in South Africa, aired on Disney Channel in India from February 4, 2020, and on Disney Channel HD from August 14, 2023, to May 10, 2025, though episodes still occasionally broadcast. The fourth dub, licensed by Cake Entertainment, was announced in June 2026, with no release date yet.
**Premise** Doraemon is a cat-like robot from the 22nd century sent to present-day Tokyo to guide a clumsy, naive, and unintelligent ten-year-old boy named Nobita Nobi onto a better path, securing his future and improving his life. Nobita’s closest friend and love interest is the kind and caring Shizuka Minamoto, while his frenemies are the wealthy Suneo Honekawa and the neighborhood bully Takeshi Gōda, also called Gian.

The series began development in 2004 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1979 anime and the release of Doraemon: Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey. A trailer was previewed on March 25, 2005, at the end of the first television broadcast of that film. The 1979 anime finale aired on March 25, 2005, and the new series officially premiered as a two-hour special on April 15, 2005. Most personnel and voice actors from the 1979 series stepped down and were replaced. Sōichirō Zen served as director from 2005 to 2017. Ayumu Watanabe, who had worked on the 1979 anime, developed character designs for eight years.
