Challenge of the GoBots, often shortened to GoBots, is an American cartoon from Hanna-Barbera that was built around Tonka's GoBots toy line. It first aired in syndication on September 15, 1984, and later became part of the weekday and weekend programming block The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera starting September 15, 1985. The series eventually found a home in reruns on the USA Cartoon Express.
The show follows two warring factions of shape-shifting robots from the planet GoBotron: the heroic Guardians and the villainous Renegades. Leader-1 commands the Guardians, while Cy-Kill leads the Renegades. Instead of traditional guns, the characters typically fire energy blasts from their fists. Female robots, like Crasher, share the same basic build as the males but have some distinct feminine features. The existence of genders among the robots is explained by their origin as organic GoBeings.
The story usually revolves around a core group from each side—Leader-1, Turbo, and Scooter for the Guardians, and Cy-Kill, Cop-Tur, and Crasher for the Renegades—with other characters appearing in rotating "guest-star" roles. There is no clear visual division between the two factions: no insignias or markings show allegiance (though the toy packaging did), and there is no shared design theme. The only general rule is that anything turning into a monstrous-looking robot or vehicle is a Renegade.
The backstory begins thousands of years ago on GoBotron, home to a human-like organic race called GoBeings. A civil war broke out when a power-hungry terrorist group, the Renegades, rose up under the villainous Cy-Kill to fight the peaceful Guardians. A Renegade sabotage operation accidentally caused a giant asteroid to hit GoBotron, triggering natural disasters that pushed the GoBeings to the brink of extinction. A genius called the Last Engineer saved his people by replacing parts of his own body with mechanical substitutes, eventually placing the brains of the GoBeings into mechanical bodies, creating the GoBots.
The GoBots gained an extra ability: after passing through a device called the Modifier, their bodies could transform into other vehicles. The Last Engineer planned to retreat to a pre-built workshop elsewhere in the galaxy, but Cy-Kill stole his ship and escaped instead. The Last Engineer then put himself into suspended animation beneath GoBotron.
