Set in the year AD 2225, humanity has colonized the solar system despite the Geduld, a mysterious sea of plasma that erupted from the sun in AD 2137. The Liebe Delta space station trains future space voyagers. During a vacation period called the Dive Break, the station is sabotaged by a gas attack, causing it to fall into the Geduld Sea. A hidden ship called the RYVIUS activates and rescues the surviving students. The castaways must navigate their new reality as anger, fear, and tension grow among the crew. The series follows protagonist Kouji Aiba as he struggles to maintain order and unity, facing personal challenges including clashes with his brother Yuki, complicated feelings for Fina S. Shinozaki, and the mysterious appearance of a girl in pink.

Reader's Guide

Infinite Ryvius was originally licensed by Bandai Entertainment in North America until it went out of print in 2012. Following Bandai Entertainment's closure, Sunrise announced at Otakon 2013 that Sentai Filmworks had rescued the series along with other former BEI titles. On August 1, 2026, Discotek Media announced at Otakon that they will release the series on Blu-ray in North America in 2026. A two-volume manga adaptation was released concurrently with the series in 1999–2000, published in English in 2004. A parody spin-off original net animation (ONA) series, Infinite Ryvius: Illusion, was released in 2000. The manga, created by Shinsuke Kurihashi and published by MediaWorks, presents the voyage from the viewpoints of female characters, unlike the anime which focuses on male protagonists. The English-language rights were acquired by ComicsOne, with the second volume delayed and finally released under DrMaster in May 2005.

Production & Creative Vision

Infinite Ryvius is a 26-episode science fiction drama anime web series produced by Sunrise. The character and mecha designs were handled by Hisashi Hirai, an artist whose work on this project would later carry forward into his character design role on Gundam SEED. One of the series' most distinctive elements is its soundtrack, which fuses Western R&B and hip-hop with J-pop vocal performances. The title track, "dis–," was performed by Mika Arisaka, a bilingual Japanese-American singer. The bulk of the songs were composed by M.I.D., while the background instrumental score was crafted by Katsuhisa Hattori. This musical approach set the series apart from typical anime soundtracks of the era, giving it a contemporary, urban feel that complemented the show's futuristic setting. The narrative's inciting incident occurs during a routine Dive Break maintenance period, when a gas attack leaves most staff unconscious and the station begins free-falling into the Geduld. Instructors sacrifice themselves to save the roughly 500 students who remained aboard, but their efforts fail. At the brink of total collapse, a hidden vessel called the RYVIUS emerges from the plasma sea and rescues the survivors, stranding them in space and abandoned by humanity's governments.

Characters & Political Drama

The cast of Infinite Ryvius is structured around competing visions of governance and survival. Kouji Aiba, the sixteen-year-old protagonist, is a diplomatic and empathetic student who repeatedly tries to preserve social order and guide the crew back toward cooperation. His younger brother Yuki is one of the most skilled pilots aboard and a Vital Guarder operator, whose emotional isolation and rivalry with Kouji place him at the center of the ship's power struggles. Aoi Housen, their childhood friend and a flight attendant trainee, serves as an emotional anchor and key mediator in interpersonal conflicts. The political landscape shifts through successive leaders: Airs Blue, who embodies violent authoritarianism and introduces a divisive points system; Ikumi Oze, a charismatic pilot whose traumatic past and paranoia drive him toward increasingly authoritarian rule; Juli Bahana, a senior student and de facto leader of the elite Zwei who represents a restrained, ethically motivated alternative; and Stein Heigar, a calculating strategist whose pursuit of order devolves into harsh technocratic control. Adaptations & North American Distribution

Infinite Ryvius has had a complex journey in North American distribution. The series was originally licensed by Bandai Entertainment, but it went out of print in 2012. Following the closure of Bandai Entertainment, Sunrise announced at Otakon 2013 that Sentai Filmworks had rescued Infinite Ryvius along with a handful of other former Bandai Entertainment titles. A two-volume manga adaptation by Shinsuke Kurihashi, published by MediaWorks Publishing, ran concurrently with the anime in 1999–2000. Unlike the anime, which follows the story through the eyes of the Aiba brothers and other mostly male characters, the manga presents the voyage from the perspective of Aoi Housen and her roommates Kozue Izumi and Reiko Ichikawa, offering episodes and plotlines not seen in the anime. The English rights were acquired by ComicsOne, with Volume 1 released in October 2004. A parody spin-off ONA titled Infinite Ryvius: Illusion was also released in 2000.
