Plot

Ten-year-old genius Jimmy Neutron lives in Retroville with his parents and robot dog Goddard. After launching a communications satellite to contact aliens, he crashes his rocket and upsets his mother. Jimmy, along with friends Carl and Sheen, sneaks out to the new Retroland amusement park.

Meanwhile, the Yolkians, egg-like aliens from Yolkus, intercept Jimmy's satellite and, seeing a picture of his parents, decide to abduct all the adults in Retroville. The children initially enjoy their freedom but soon miss their parents. Jimmy deduces the abduction and leads the children in building rockets from Retroland rides to rescue their families in space.

Production

John A. Davis first conceived the idea in the 1980s as a live-action short titled Runaway Rocketboy, featuring a character named Johnny Quasar. The project lay dormant until Davis rediscovered the script while moving. His studio, DNA Productions, had begun experimenting with computer animation using LightWave 3D, and Davis decided the film would suit CGI. Davis and co-founder Keith Alcorn created a 40-second proof-of-concept demo showing Johnny and his robot dog flying through an asteroid belt.

The demo was shown at the 1995 SIGGRAPH convention, winning two Wavey awards. Steve Oedekerk of O Entertainment saw a still in a magazine and contacted Davis, eventually helping pitch the concept to networks. Production began in early 2000 and took 24 months, using off-the-shelf programs including LightWave 3D and messiah:studio.

Marketing and release

The film premiered at the Paramount studio lot on December 9, 2001, and was released theatrically on December 21, 2001. Marketing focused on presenting Jimmy as a character children would enjoy. A website was created, and tie-in deals included a Game Boy Advance game from THQ and a soundtrack on Jive Records. A series of shorts aired on Nickelodeon starting February 5, 2001, with clips compiled into a trailer attached to Rugrats in Paris: The Movie. A monthly comic strip launched in Nickelodeon Magazine in April 2001.

Jimmy appeared at the 2001 Kids' Choice Awards and in Trident gum commercials. Promotional partners included RadioShack and Mattel. A viral campaign had Jimmy interrupting Nickelodeon shows with his zapping device starting September 2001. The film was released on VHS and DVD on July 2, 2002, with subsequent DVD re-releases and a Blu-ray release on March 8, 2022.

Expanded franchise

A sequel television series, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, premiered on Nickelodeon on July 20, 2002, and ran for three seasons until November 25, 2006. A trilogy of crossover specials with The Fairly OddParents, titled The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour, aired between 2004 and 2006. A spin-off series, Planet Sheen, focused on Sheen Estevez and aired from October 2, 2010, to February 15, 2013. A simulator ride, Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast, operated at Universal Studios Florida from April 4, 2003, to August 18, 2011.

A film sequel was reported in development in 2002 for a summer 2004 release, but was cancelled because writers could not agree on a story; Keith Alcorn noted that the television series reduced incentive for a film. In 2016, director John A. Davis stated he has a story for a reboot but is waiting for the right situation. In 2020, voice actor Rob Paulsen expressed openness to a reboot.
