Lighter Than Hare
Bugs Bunny outwits Yosemite Sam from outer space.
Last updated
Friz Freleng wrote and directed this 1960 Merrie Melodies short, one of three Bugs Bunny cartoons he both wrote and directed. It stars Bugs and Yosemite Sam. The title, a pun on "lighter than air," was released on December 17, 1960.
Plot
The credits appear against an outer-space backdrop, then the scene shifts to Earth's Pacific Northwest. A flying saucer descends near deserted Highway 17, observed by Yosemite Sam of Outer Space from inside. Bugs Bunny, considering moving because of worsening surroundings, becomes Sam's target.
Sam sends Robot ZX29B to capture Bugs, but the robot's incompetence leads to comedic failures. Sam eventually pursues Bugs personally, setting elaborate traps that Bugs evades with resourcefulness. Sam escalates by deploying a Demolition Squad and an indestructible tank, but Bugs outwits him each time.
A ferret robot also fails against Bugs' self-made robot. Sam's final threat is a huge cannon aimed at Bugs' home, but Bugs outmaneuvers him. Sam departs Earth believing his mission accomplished, while Bugs enjoys the victory and tunes into a radio broadcast.
