Plot

The series centered on three tightly intertwined relationships within one family. Maddie and Ben had been dating for nine years and were content living together without marrying. Maddie's life changed when her younger sister Mia announced she was pregnant and marrying Casey, a man she had known for only seven weeks. Their parents, married for 35 years with their own issues, approved of the union, causing Maddie and Ben to question their own relationship.

Production

Before landing on its final name, the sitcom went through several titles: Better Together, Couples, Leapfrog, and briefly, That Couple. ABC ordered the pilot on January 15, 2010, with a script by Shana Goldberg-Meehan, a former Friends writer and executive producer, and direction by James Burrows. Bonanza Productions, Silver and Gold Productions, and Warner Bros. Television handled production. The series occupied the Wednesday 8:30 slot, following The Middle and leading into Modern Family. ABC ordered a full 22-episode season on October 26. Ben Kweller composed the theme song. Reba McEntire guest-starred in episode eight, "Better with Flirting," as wedding planner Lorraine Ashley. This marked the second sitcom pairing for Josh Cooke and Jennifer Finnigan, after Committed, and the second for Cooke and Kurt Fuller, following Big Day.
