Background
Ozzie Nelson's orchestra gained national radio exposure after a booking at Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, New York, in the early 1930s. Ozzie and Harriet signed to appear regularly on The Baker's Broadcast (1933–1938), hosted by Joe Penner, then Robert Ripley, and finally Feg Murray. They married on October 8, 1935, during that series' run, realizing that working together in radio would keep them together. In 1941, the Nelsons joined The Red Skelton Show, providing much of the music, and stayed for three years. They also made guest appearances on shows such as The Fred Allen Show and Suspense. When Red Skelton was drafted in March 1944, Ozzie created his own family situation comedy. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet launched on CBS on October 8, 1944, moved to NBC in October 1948, then returned to CBS in April 1949. The final radio years were on ABC from October 14, 1949, to June 18, 1954, with 402 radio episodes produced. The Nelsons' deal with ABC gave the network the option to move the program to television.
Television series
Before the television series aired, Ozzie Nelson formed Stage Five Productions and persuaded ABC to agree to a 10-year contract that paid the Nelsons whether the series was canceled or not. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet premiered on ABC on October 10, 1952, and stayed until April 23, 1966; in 1962, it became the first prime-time scripted series to reach the 10-year milestone. The series strove for realism, using exterior shots of the Nelsons' actual home at 1822 Camino Palmero Street in Los Angeles, while interior shots were filmed on General Service Studios' Stage 3. The opening credits noted that the Nelson characters were 'played by' the Nelson family. A 1959 episode titled 'Ozzie Changes History' is devoted to the history of the fictional town 'Warfield.' Storylines were often taken from the Nelsons' real life; when David and Rick married June Blair and Kristin Harmon, their wives joined the cast. Ozzie's profession was seldom mentioned; according to granddaughter Tracy Nelson, Ozzie told interviewers the TV Ozzie was a lawyer.
Home media
For years, the show was widely thought to be in the public domain because cheap, heavily cut episodes were sold on VHS and DVD by unauthorized sellers. In truth, the Nelson family companies—Ozzie & Harriet Enterprises and the Rick Nelson Company LLC—own the rights, and they registered new copyrights for the episodes with the Library of Congress to make that clear. The first official home video release, The Best of the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, came out on May 1, 2007, through Shout! Factory under license. In 2021, MPI Home Video took over the distribution rights, and Sam Nelson, Rick’s son, led a project to restore and digitally remaster all 435 episodes from the original 35mm network negatives, including the original commercials. That same year, Time-Life and MPI offered a set of 100 restored episodes. On June 21, 2022, the first two complete, authorized seasons hit DVD. By October 10, 2023, all fourteen seasons were available, and the full series boxed set followed on December 19, 2023.
The Nelsons' post-TV lives
After the short-lived sitcom Ozzie's Girls, Ozzie Nelson worked as producer and director for series including Adam-12, The D.A., and Bridget Loves Bernie. He died of liver cancer in 1975 at age 69. Rick Nelson continued to record and perform, forming the Stone Canyon Band and releasing the 1972 single 'Garden Party.' He divorced Kristin Harmon in 1981 and was killed in a plane accident on December 31, 1985, in DeKalb, Texas. He was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Harriet grew reclusive after Ozzie's death; her last onscreen appearance was in 1989 on Father Dowling Mysteries. She died of congestive heart failure and emphysema in 1994 at age 85. Ozzie, Harriet, and Rick are interred together at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills Cemetery. David Nelson continued producing feature films and television commercials and died from colon cancer on January 11, 2011.
