Gadget Boy & Heather

A bionic kid detective battles evil with gadgets and allies.

Last updated

Gadget Boy & Heather, also known as Gadget Boy, is an animated television series co-produced by DIC Productions, L.P., France Animation, and M6. A spin-off of Inspector Gadget, it follows a bionic kid detective who battles the villainous Spydra with help from his robotic dog G-9 and agent Heather. Don Adams, the original voice of Inspector Gadget, voices the titular character in this series.

Synopsis

The series centers on Gadget Boy, a bionic child detective whose personality mirrors that of Inspector Gadget, including a similar clumsiness. He is frequently rescued from peril by the more practical Agent Heather, though his own high-tech gadgets and extendable limbs also aid him. His bionic implants were installed by inventor Myron Dabble, who nurses an unrequited crush on Heather. Assignments come from Chief Stromboli, a long-suffering figure akin to Chief Quimby.

Gadget Boy is assisted by the resourceful Heather, a tall agent in her early 20s, and by G-9, a robotic dog with morphing abilities that often extricates the team from trouble. The main antagonist is Spydra, a mask-wearing, six-armed villainess accompanied by the vulture Boris and twin henchmen Mulch and Houmous. The theme song was written and performed by Mike Piccirillo, who also composed the underscore with Jean-Michel Guirao.

Development

In November 1992, DIC Entertainment announced several new projects, including a female-led Inspector Gadget spin-off titled Gadget Girl. Bohbot Entertainment acquired US broadcast rights in 1994. At MIP-TV in April 1994, DIC entered a co-production deal with M6 for a new animated series. DIC initially proposed the Gadget Girl concept to M6, which was rejected, followed by a young Inspector Gadget-like baby character, also rejected.

The series was eventually conceived around a six-year-old bionic detective and officially announced at MIPCOM as Gadget Boy. France Animation handled storyboards and post-production, with animation outsourced in Asia. DIC and M6 shared creative supervision, with DIC handling scripts and French scriptwriters contributing. Distribution was split: M6 handled Europe, DIC handled other territories.

For a second season, DIC pitched an educational approach titled Gadget Boy's Adventures in History, which M6 accepted. Work began in January 1996, with DIC teaming with the National Education Association for educational content, and the season was pre-sold to The History Channel.

Broadcast

The first season of the show was part of the Amazin' Adventures II syndicated block in the US, with reruns airing until 1996. The History Channel broadcast the second season. Toon Disney carried first-season reruns from April 19, 1998, to January 5, 2002. The series returned to American television on This TV's Cookie Jar Toons block from 2010 to September 2011.

As of 2022, it streams on Pluto TV. In the Philippines, it aired weekly on IBC from 1996 to 1999 via Vintage Television, then moved to GMA Network. The UK saw it on BBC One and BBC Two's CBBC block from 1997 to 2001, followed by early-morning runs on Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Canada's Family Channel broadcast it from 1998 to 2000.
