The original lineup of Tony Portaro, Tony Scaglione, and Tony Bono recorded their debut album Power and Pain, released on Roadrunner Records in 1985. Joe Cangelosi replaced Scaglione later that year when Scaglione left for a brief fill-in stint with Slayer (approximately one month or less). Cangelosi recorded Ticket to Mayhem in 1987 with the two Tonys. In 1989, Glenn Hansen joined as singer for the album Insult to Injury. The band split due to business reasons but reunited in 1995 after Portaro and Scaglione joined forces with Billy Milano's M.O.D. as touring guitarists for a European tour. Whiplash released Cult of One (1996) and Sit Stand Kneel Prey (1997) before the three Tonys recorded Thrashback (1998) and broke up again in 1999. Bassist Tony Bono died in 2002 from a heart attack at age 38.

In 2009, Portaro and Cangelosi reformed the band with bassist Rich Day, recording Unborn Again (2009). They played festivals in Europe including Wacken Open Air in Germany and Jalometalli in Finland. After a limited break in 2010, Portaro announced Scaglione's return, but Scaglione left after two weeks due to scheduling issues. The band continued with various drummers, including Dan Foord of SikTh. In 2015, another Scaglione reunion was announced but did not last; Tom Tierney and later Ron Lipnicki (ex-Overkill) took over drums. In July 2018, Whiplash signed with Metal Blade Records. An album tentatively titled Old School American Way was teased for nearly a decade but scrapped in favor of Thrashquake, which was also scrapped. On August 26, 2026, the band announced the album, now titled Roar, would be released on November 27.
