Megadeth is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, formed in 1983 by Dave Mustaine, who handles vocals and guitar. So What!* (1988), *Rust in Peace* (1990), *Countdown to Extinction* (1992), and *Youthanasia* (1994). These records and worldwide tours earned them widespread recognition. Their seventeenth and final studio album, *Megadeth*, came out in 2026 and became their first to reach number one on the Billboard 200. Mustaine has said the band will break up after the tour supporting that album ends.
Over its 43-year history, Megadeth has seen many lineup changes, with Mustaine as the only constant member. The band briefly stopped in 2002 after Mustaine injured his arm, then reformed in 2004 without longtime bassist David Ellefson, who had taken legal action against Mustaine. Ellefson settled out of court and returned in 2010, but was fired in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct. The current lineup includes Mustaine, bassist James LoMenzo, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, and drummer Dirk Verbeuren.
Five of Megadeth’s seventeen studio albums have gone platinum in the United States. The band has received twelve Grammy nominations, winning their first Grammy in 2017 for the song "Dystopia" in the Best Metal Performance category. Their mascot, Vic Rattlehead, appears regularly on album covers and at live shows.
