History
The Johnson sisters—Kim, Kandy, and Krystal—began as a gospel trio, singing in church and later with touring gospel artists such as Andrae Crouch and Shirley Caesar. Krystal left the group after entering a relationship with Earth, Wind & Fire member Philip Bailey. As a duo, JS appeared on television programs including Ally McBeal and The Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2001, they signed to DreamWorks Records, a former DreamWorks Pictures division later absorbed into Universal Music Group.
They came under the management of Ronald Isley, lead singer of The Isley Brothers, after appearing on the band's albums Eternal (2001) and Body Kiss (2003). JS released their debut and only album, Ice Cream, on July 29, 2003. The duo blamed DreamWorks for the album's moderate commercial performance, claiming the label failed to properly promote it. At the time, DreamWorks Records was nearing a merger with Geffen Records, completed in December 2003.
After the absorption, JS was dropped from the label. Following the 46th Annual Grammy Awards, the duo quietly disbanded to focus on personal and solo careers. Kim Johnson performed background vocals for artists including Nelly, Rod Stewart, and Jamie Foxx. She supported her husband after his tax evasion conviction and three-year prison sentence in 2006, and gave birth to their son, Ronald Isley Jr., alone due to the situation.
