History
Xscape was formed in 1990 by Kandi Burruss, Tamera Coggins, Tameka Cottle, and sisters LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott. The members met while attending Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia. Xscape first charted in August 1993 with "Just Kickin' It", the lead single from their debut album Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, released in the United States on October 12, 1993. The album featured productions by Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal and a video by Rich Murray.
Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha peaked at number seventeen on the Billboard 200 and number three on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album sold over one million copies in the United States, earning a platinum certification. The lead single "Just Kickin' It" reached number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and number two on the Hot 100, selling over two million copies and earning a two-time platinum certification. The second single "Understanding" peaked in the top ten on the Hot 100 and sold over one million copies, becoming certified platinum.
In 1994 the group toured as the opening act for Salt-N-Pepa's Very Necessary 12 Play Tour and appeared on the song "Who's That Man" from the soundtrack of the comedy film The Mask. For their second album Off the Hook, released July 11, 1995, Xscape worked with producers including Organized Noize, Kevin Kendricks, and Daryl Simmons. The album peaked at number twenty-three on the Billboard 200 and number three on the R&B Albums chart. Its lead single "Feels So Good" was released in June 1995 and peaked at number thirty-two on the Hot 100. Off the Hook has been credited with developing Xscape into a mature sound.
