History

Car Bomb formed around 2000 after members of two bands sharing a rehearsal space under a butcher shop in Rockville Centre, New York, became close. Greg Kubacki and Michael Dafferner, then in Neck, shared the space with Elliot Hoffman and Jon Modell of Spooge. In 2002, Modell, who had toured as a bassist for Soilent Green, was unhappy with his current project and asked Kubacki and Dafferner to start a side project, which they named Car Bomb. A three-song demo came out in 2004, containing early takes of "Rid", "M^6", and "His Eyes". A split 7-inch with Burnt by the Sun appeared in 2007, featuring the song "Pieces of You". Their debut full-length, Centralia, arrived on February 6, 2007, through Relapse Records. Relapse dropped the band in 2011, and all later albums were self-released via Bandcamp. Each member holds a professional day job in a tech field, which limits their touring but gives them unusual financial freedom. As one writer noted, some bands build their own studios, but Car Bomb built their own microphones from scratch. This independence means they don't rely on a label to cover recording costs. In May 2009, while touring with Gojira and The Chariot, the band played new songs from the album w^w^^w^w, footage of which appeared on YouTube. Michael Dafferner premiered his documentary Why_You_Do_This at the Queen's World Film Festival in August 2011; the film focuses on money, touring, and technical metal. A flood in early 2012 destroyed or damaged most of the gear in their New York rehearsal space. Their second album, w^w^^w^w, came out later that year and includes a guest vocal from Gojira’s Joseph Duplantier. The title is officially said as "w click w", though guitarist Greg Kubacki acknowledged that many fans simply call it the "waveform record."
