Tristan Shone, a mechanical engineer and artist, founded Author & Punisher after being unable to find band members and finding conventional instruments insufficient for the sound he wanted. He built his own devices—Drone Machines and Dub Machines—to achieve his desired industrial metal and drone music style. The project's name came from a religious t-shirt Shone wore in college, which deliberately altered Hebrews 12:2—the verse refers to Jesus as 'author and finisher' or 'author and perfecter,' but Shone replaced 'finisher' with 'punisher' to create the name.

Shone has released nine albums as Author & Punisher. Melk en Honing (2015) and Pressure Mine (2017) were released through Phil Anselmo's label Housecore Records. Beastland (2018) came out on Relapse Records, which became Shone's current label. Krüller (2022) featured several guest musicians. For live dates after Krüller, Shone added guitarist Doug Sabolick, marking the first gigs he performed live with another musician as Author & Punisher.
