Characters
The cast bears some similarities to the 2012 spin-off Clue: The Classic Mystery Game, which also features secret societies or houses. Seamus, played by Sterling Beaumon, is a rebel who has been expelled from three schools and does not attend Lakeside Prep with the rest of the crew. He skateboards everywhere and works as a busboy at a hotel; rumor has it he runs with the Gr$$n Scene, a street art crew. His character is loosely based on Mr. Green from the original board game, and his insignia is a pair of green film reels suggesting a focus on the arts. Whitney Burrows, portrayed by Sarah Desjardins, is an activist involved in petitions, fundraisers, and volunteering for "White Lights for a Better Future." She is in a relationship with Lucas. Her character is loosely based on Mrs. White, and her insignia is a white pair of scales representing justice and equality. Agnes Peabody, played by Kendall Amyre Ferguson, runs a gossip site called The Eyes of the Peacock and is obsessed with news and style. According to Dmitri, she posts gossip on a site with 'Peacock' in its title. Her character is loosely based on Mrs. Peacock, and her insignia is a crossed pair of blue keys, possibly alluding to the saying "communication is key."
Production
The Hub announced in August 2010 that it would air a half-hour miniseries based on the board game Clue. Filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, the production was overseen by Hasbro Studios. In November 2011, creator Raven Metzner expressed hope to Collider.com for further mysteries but could not confirm a second season. The miniseries was later edited into a two-hour television film.
Reception
The series premiere brought in 189,000 viewers. Brian Lowry of Variety said that marketing-driven constructs are often the kiss of death creatively, but the commercial template surrounding the miniseries is clever enough to overcome such concerns. Lowry added that the Hub is replicating some of the old razzle-dazzle of local kids' TV around a production that ought to possess some multigenerational appeal.
