History

Baroness was formed in the summer of 2003 in Savannah, Georgia, with an original lineup of guitarist and vocalist John Baizley, guitarist Tim Loose, bassist Summer Welch, and drummer Allen Blickle. Baizley, Welch, Blickle, and future member Pete Adams had previously played together in a punk rock band called Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Early Baroness material was written by Baizley and Adams at a music store and later a small apartment in Savannah; the first song written was "Tower Falls." The band recorded a demo in September 2003 with Steve West of Marble Valley and self-released it that year. After touring in the fall, they gained attention from independent label Hyperrealist Records. Their debut EP, First, was recorded in November at The Jam Room Studio in Columbia, South Carolina with producer Phillip Cope of Kylesa and released by Hyperrealist on August 3, 2004. A follow-up EP, Second, was released by Hyperrealist on September 5, 2005. That year, Tim Loose was replaced on guitar by Brian Blickle, brother of drummer Allen Blickle. After touring Europe, the band reunited with Tim Loose in the studio to record two final songs for a split album with Unpersons titled A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk, released by At a Loss Recordings on June 26, 2007. Baroness began recording their first studio album at The Jam Room with Phillip Cope in March 2007, and soon after signed with Relapse Records. Their debut full-length, Red Album, was released by Relapse on September 4, 2007, with a limited pressing of 1000 copies on dark red vinyl by Hyperrealist. The album received positive reception, with Revolver naming it the top album of the year.

Musical style

Baroness blends sludge, progressive, alternative, and post-metal into their heavy sound. Their third album, Yellow & Green, moved them from sludge toward a more accessible alternative rock style. Invisible Oranges called them a band of extremes, shifting from crushing guitars and punk screams to finger-picked acoustic guitar with bluegrass and country touches, merging prog-metal’s precision with psychedelic rock’s warmth.
