History

Before forming Adema, Mark Chavez played guitar for B.P.D. (Big, Powerful, and Dangerous), while Tim Fluckey and Dave DeRoo had previously played together in Juice. DeRoo also played with Sexart alongside Orgy guitarist Ryan Shuck and Jonathan Davis. Mike Ransom played in local Bakersfield bands, and Kris Kohls was a former member of Cradle of Thorns/Videodrone, who had been signed to Korn's Elementree Records. The connections of Chavez and Kohls to Korn sparked a major label bidding war, and the band signed with Arista Records in October 2000 on a three-album deal. Their debut album, Adema, was released in August 2001 and sold 46,800 copies in its first week, debuting at number 27 on the Billboard 200. The singles 'Giving In' and 'The Way You Like It' received significant rock radio airplay. The album was produced by Bill Appleberry and Tobi Miller, with all lyrics written by Chavez. Adema performed on the main stage of Ozzfest and toured with Music as a Weapon, SnoCore Rock, and Projekt Revolution. By September 2004, the album had sold 671,000 copies in the United States. In 2002, the band released the EP Insomniac's Dream, which included the single 'Immortal' for the video game Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, a cover of Alice in Chains' 'Nutshell', and remixes. That same year, their track 'Everyone' appeared on the Resident Evil soundtrack. Their second album, Unstable, was released in August 2003 and produced by Howard Benson.
