Twelve Minutes

A time-loop mystery set entirely in a small apartment.

Twelve Minutes

Twelve Minutes is an adventure game created by Luís António and released by Annapurna Interactive. It launched on August 19, 2021, for Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, followed by versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on December 7, 2021. Netflix published a mobile version for iOS and Android on December 13, 2022. The game is set almost entirely within a small apartment and tasks the player with replaying a 12-minute loop to solve a mystery.

The gameplay uses a top-down perspective and point-and-click controls. Players control the husband, voiced by James McAvoy, as he interacts with his wife, voiced by Daisy Ridley, in an apartment containing a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and closet. Without specific actions, the husband learns his wife is pregnant within the 12-minute cycle. A man claiming to be a cop, voiced by Willem Dafoe, then arrives, accuses the wife of murdering her father years earlier, knocks out the husband, and kills the wife and her unborn child. Time resets to the moment the husband enters the apartment, allowing the player to try different actions to understand the cop’s suspicion, prevent the arrest, or break the loop. The husband is the only character who remembers previous cycles, and this knowledge can be used to alter events. If the husband dies, leaves, or time runs out, the loop resets. The game takes roughly six to eight hours to complete, though each cycle lasts only 12 minutes in real time.

The plot is driven by player decisions within the time loop. After the initial events, the husband discovers a hidden pocket watch and convinces his wife he is reliving the evening. She confesses that her father had an affair with the nanny, producing a child, which led to her mother’s death. During a Christmas Eve argument, she accidentally shot her father and fled. The husband later learns the cop was a close friend of the father, whose daughter has cancer, and that the father survived the shooting but was killed on New Year’s Eve by someone else. The husband proves his wife’s innocence, and the three deduce the killer was the wife’s half-brother. The loop continues, so the husband investigates the brother’s identity. Interrogating the cop reveals that the husband’s mother was the nanny.

Lore & Background

Twelve Minutes is played from a top-down perspective and is set in an apartment suite shared by a husband and wife, including the main living and kitchen area, their bedroom, a bathroom, and a closet. The player controls the husband in a point-and-click adventure style. Without certain actions, over 12 minutes the husband learns his wife is pregnant, then a self-identified cop arrives, accuses the wife of murdering her father, and kills the husband and wife. Time resets to the husband entering the apartment, and the player must figure out how to end the loop. The husband retains knowledge of prior cycles. The gameplay loop has been compared to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

The plot is decision-driven. After finding a hidden watch and proving the time loop to his wife, she confesses she accidentally shot her father years ago. The husband learns the cop was a close friend of the father, and that the father survived the shooting but was later killed by someone else. The three deduce the killer was the wife's brother from an affair. The husband discovers his mother was the nanny, and he relives a memory of accidentally shooting his father during a struggle over his love for his half-sister. The time loops are revealed to be the husband imagining a positive future with his wife; the cop is a manifestation of his father's interference. Depending on the player's choices, the loops may continue, reset, or end.

Reader's Guide

Twelve Minutes is notable for its tight, single-location design and its use of a 12-minute time loop as the core gameplay mechanic. The game was developed by Luís António, a former artist from Rockstar Games and Ubisoft, who spent time in 2012 working on The Witness before setting out to make his own game. He wanted to explore the consequences of decision-making and how choices affect others. The game was inspired by film directors Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, and David Fincher, as well as films Groundhog Day, Memento, Rear Window, and Filth. António premiered the game at PAX East in 2015 with placeholder art, and it received an honorable mention for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival in 2016. Originally planned for 2016, then 2020, the game was delayed to 2021. Voice acting was provided by James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Willem Dafoe, recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's poster was designed as a homage to films from Kubrick, Hitchcock, and Fincher. The game's significance lies in its reductionist approach, removing elements like visible timepieces to focus on player observation and conversation cues.
