The Expanse: A Telltale Series

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a five-part episodic adventure game created by Telltale Games and Deck Nine. It acts as a prequel to the television series The Expanse, produced by Alcon Entertainment. The episodes were released from July through September 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch version arriving in April 2026.

Players control Camina Drummer, the executive officer of the Artemis, an independent salvage ship traveling the Solar System prior to the events of the TV show. The crew uses zero-gravity gear to scavenge abandoned spacecraft for valuable parts and cargo. The main plot centers on a derelict ship carrying a highly valuable load and the fallout from the crew’s decision to claim it. Gameplay is in third-person view, allowing players to move through environments and use point-and-click actions on objects. Interactions with non-player characters trigger dialogue choices that alter the story’s direction, affect how other characters view the player, and help determine the ending.

The game was first announced at The Game Awards on December 9, 2021. On May 17, 2023, the first episode was revealed for release on July 27, 2023, with four more episodes coming every two weeks. A bonus episode, “Archangel,” featuring Shohreh Aghdashloo’s character, was announced at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2023, and released on November 20, 2023. The Nintendo Switch version launched on April 16, 2026.

According to Metacritic, the game received generally favorable reviews. GameSpot praised its writing, narrative design, Cara Gee’s performance as Drummer, character-driven gameplay, and visual animations, but criticized the zero-g movement and collectible mechanic. IGN also lauded Gee’s performance, writing, and visuals, but felt the game “struggles to find engaging mechanics outside of its dialogue scenes, relying too heavily on quicktime events and mediocre movement challenges.”
