Immortals Fenyx Rising

A mortal must stop Typhon in a Greek-mythology open world.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a 2020 action-adventure game from Ubisoft Quebec, published by Ubisoft. It launched on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The story is framed as a tale told by Prometheus to Zeus, following Fenyx—a mortal who sets out to rescue their brother and stop the escaped titan Typhon. Critics gave the game positive reviews.

In this third-person action-adventure, players control Fenyx, whose gender, voice, and appearance can be customized (though the character is canonically female). After unlocking the Hall of Gods, further changes are possible using Aphrodite's Beauty Chair. The Golden Isle, the game’s open world, has seven distinct regions inspired by Greek myths. A bird companion named Phosphor helps mark points of interest on the map. Fenyx can climb cliffs, ride mounts, and fly with the wings of Daedalus to explore freely from the start. Rifts in the world teleport the player to the Vaults of Tartaros, platforming challenges that test combat and traversal skills. Side objectives and optional puzzles are also available.

Enemies include creatures like minotaurs and cyclopes. Combat features fast light attacks with a sword and slow heavy attacks with an axe, plus a bow and arrows. Stamina must be managed, as Fenyx tires after repeated moves. As the game progresses, godlike abilities unlock—such as Ares' Wrath, which launches enemies into the air with spears. Armor and weapons can be upgraded by gathering crafting resources.

The plot begins with Typhon escaping after eons imprisoned under a mountain by Zeus. He attacks the Olympian gods, stealing their essences and powers. Zeus flees to Prometheus, who wagers that a mortal can beat Typhon, winning Prometheus his freedom. Using foresight, Prometheus tells the story of Fenyx.

Fenyx, a young shield-bearer for the Delian League, survives a shipwreck on the Golden Isle, finding everyone turned to stone. After collecting artifacts and receiving a prophecy, Fenyx rescues a stranger who turns out to be Hermes. He explains Typhon’s threat, and Fenyx agrees to restore the deposed gods. Along the way, Fenyx befriends a fire bird named Phosphor. The restored gods include Aphrodite (a tree), Ares (a rooster), Hephaestus (an automaton), and Athena (a child). Fenyx also defeats corrupted spirits of Achilles, Atalanta, Heracles, and Odysseus.

Lore & Background

Immortals Fenyx Rising was developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the team behind Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Game director Scott Phillips noted that the project originated from a software bug during Odyssey's development that changed human crew members into giant cyclopses, leading the team to create a separate game embracing Greek mythology. The game was announced as Gods and Monsters during E3 2019, but was delayed in October 2019 after another Ubisoft title failed commercially. The delay allowed the team to add Zeus and Prometheus as narrators, replacing Greek poet Homer. A work-in-progress build leaked on Stadia under the codename Orpheus in June 2020. The game was re-revealed as Immortals Fenyx Rising on September 10, 2020, a rename that appeared to result from a trademark dispute with Monster Energy over the Gods and Monsters name.

Reader's Guide

Immortals Fenyx Rising received positive reviews from critics. The game's open world, the Golden Isle, consists of seven distinct regions inspired by Greek mythology, fully accessible from the start. Players control Fenyx from a third-person perspective, customizing gender, voice, and appearance, with further changes possible via Aphrodite's Beauty Chair. Gameplay includes climbing, riding mounts, flying with the wings of Daedalus, and platforming challenges in the Vaults of Tartaros. Combat features light and heavy melee attacks, bow and arrows, and stamina management, with unlockable godlike abilities such as Ares' Wrath. The narrative, framed by Prometheus and Zeus's wager, follows Fenyx restoring the Olympian gods and confronting Typhon. The story includes twists about Fenyx's parentage and Prometheus's manipulation. The game's significance lies in its humorous tone, particularly the bickering between Zeus and Prometheus, and its origin from a development bug, showcasing how technical quirks can inspire full-scale projects.
