In the 2002-03 UEFA Champions League semi-finals AC Milan met their city rivals Inter, the clubs' first European matches against each other. Both games ended level, 0-0 and 1-1, and Milan went through on the away goals rule even though both clubs play at the same stadium.

Milan then beat Juventus on penalties in the final at Old Trafford on 28 May 2003, the first Champions League final between two Italian clubs. The clubs met again in the 2004-05 quarter-finals, when UEFA awarded Milan a 3-0 win after the second leg was abandoned because of flares.
