After Franco Baresi's final season in 1997, AC Milan retired the number 6 shirt he had worn throughout his career. A celebration match in his honour, featuring many football stars, was played at the San Siro on 28 October 1997.
Lore & Background
Baresi retired at the end of the 1996-97 Serie A season, aged 37, after 20 seasons with the club. In 1999 he was voted Milan's Player of the Century. Milan later did the same with Paolo Maldini's number 3, stating that it would be passed on to one of his sons if they reached the senior team.
