History

Its original members were guitarists Giuliano Gizzi and David Aitken, bassist Cami Morlotti, vocalist Mark Rankin, and drummer Alan Thornton. A deal with A&M Records came in 1988. Soon after, Thornton, Morlotti, and Aitken left, and the lineup shifted to include bassist Dante Gizzi, drummer Scott Shields, and guitarist Baby Stafford. Jim McDermott played drums on the early albums. Their first album, Taking On the World, came out in July 1989, produced by Kenny MacDonald. The lead single, "Better Days," made the UK Singles Chart top 40 and got the band onto Top of the Pops for the first time. Other songs on the album were "Shame on You" and "Money (Everybody Loves Her)." Later in 1989, Gun opened for the Rolling Stones on their European Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour, playing big venues like Wembley Stadium, Berlin's Olympic Stadium, and Madrid's Estadio Vicente Calderón. The second album, Gallus, also produced by MacDonald, arrived in 1992. Its single "Steal Your Fire" did well on the charts. Sharleen Spiteri and Alan Thornton sang backing vocals. That same year, Gun supported Def Leppard on the UK leg of their Adrenalize World Tour. Before the third album, Swagger, both Dickson and Shields left the band. Dickson played on the album without credit, then joined Bruce Dickinson's solo band in 1994 and later toured heavily with Robbie Williams, leaving Giuliano Gizzi as the sole guitarist. Mark Kerr, whose brother Jim Kerr fronts Simple Minds, took over on drums from Shields.
