Critical reception
The song drew mixed to positive reviews from music critics. Bill Lamb of About.com awarded it four out of five stars, praising the reggae-drenched production and Adam Levine's confident pop vocals, though he noted the guilt-ridden lyrics over a sunny arrangement felt formulaic. Robert Copsey of Digital Spy described it as a bouncy, reggae-flecked midtempo with a reassuringly familiar chorus. Rick Florino of Artist Direct gave a very positive assessment, highlighting the tight bass, diverse guitar work, and Levine's vocal performance, comparing him to Bono and Anthony Kiedis.
Robbie Daw expressed division, finding the use of slang out of character for the band but acknowledging the commercial viability under Max Martin's production. Fraser McAlpine of BBC Music offered a more mixed view, criticizing the melody for frequent repetition and a Morse code note pattern reminiscent of a Rihanna song. Simon Price of The Independent called the electro-reggae piece something that makes Ace of Base sound like Lee "Scratch" Perry.
