True crime told through the people who live where it happened.
1998, A&E, and an American documentary series that made the town the point before the crime even entered the frame — that was City Confidential. Every episode opens by introducing a specific community: its history, its quirks, its character — and only then does the local case come up. From there the show tracked how the investigation and trial shook the whole town, often pulling out something you wouldn't have expected about the place. The settings ranged wide, from tiny villages to major cities like Boston and Los Angeles. Actor Paul Winfield narrated from the premiere until his death in 2004, and Keith David took the mic from there. Jupiter Entertainment produced the original run, which ended in December 2005. In October 2021 a revival landed, hosted by Mike Colter and produced by Propagate.

Examples include medium-sized cities such as Newberry, South Carolina; Saddle River, New Jersey; Little Rock, Arkansas; and St. Charles, Missouri; and major cities such as Boston, Massachusetts; New Orleans, Louisiana; Miami, Florida; and Los Angeles, California.
