Synopsis
William Banks, a recovering drug addict living in Los Angeles, made a pledge to God after his daughter Lula was born: if given a second chance, he would end his own drug abuse and help others overcome their addictions. Banks and his small team of fellow recovering addicts work to assist clients in ending their addictions, often resorting to unethical and illegal tactics. His success has earned him respect from the LAPD and other officials, who frequently refer clients to him and overlook his vigilante methods. Banks considers his work a calling and will take cases pro bono for clients who cannot pay. In addition to his addiction-fighting activities, he runs a shop selling surfing equipment, connected to a garage that repairs automobiles and surfboards, and works at a drug rehabilitation center called Transitions. Each episode typically opens with Banks having a one-way conversation with God, asking for guidance or airing grievances about why bad things happen. These scenes are left ambiguous as to whether they are real or illustrations of his thoughts. The show's intro mentions that Banks also helps with sex and gambling addictions, though neither was the focus of an episode.
