Critical reception
James Masterton called the song a "fairly standard piece of Brit soul" in his weekly chart commentary. Alan Jones of Music Week noted that after "I Never Felt Like This Before", Paris "tackles a less flowing, looser and altogether jazzier song", adding that it was "vocally superb, but lacking the commercial appeal" and likely to chart lower. Ian McCann from NME described it as a "standard understated and impossibly unimaginative soul groove". James Hamilton of the Record Mirror Dance Update termed it "EnVogue-ish" and "slinky". Damon Albarn and Alex James of Blur gave it five out of five in Smash Hits; Albarn said Paris "sounds more and more like Anita Baker" and called the music "sexy" and "energetic".
