Background and composition

Noel was discovered by a man seeking singers and was invited to a studio to record a song. Having never written a song before, Noel was advised to write about his feelings. The initial recording was titled "Spanish Morning". After several weeks of recording, the man disappeared. At that time, Noel worked as an assistant bartender at a club, where his boss had connections with artists such as David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Noel recorded a demo and gave it to his boss. Weeks later, his boss reported that the song had been shown to a label manager, who liked the music but not the lyrics and requested changes. Noel rewrote the song and renamed it "Silent Morning". Spin magazine listed the recording of "Silent Morning" as the seventh of ten "Great Moments in Recording Studio History", citing an alleged incident in which producer Aaron Hanson (of Hanson & Davis) put a gun to Noel's head and threatened to kill him if he did not sing the song Hanson's way.
