Mayte version
Mayte recorded the song under the title If Eye Love U 2night and released it as the second single from her only album, Child of the Sun. In her narration of her love story, she describes her first date with her lover as being in bed and asks if he will love her forever. The song was suggested to be about Prince, whom she was dating at the time; the two later married on Valentine's Day, 1996. Prince originally wrote the song for his band member Gayle Chapman, who recorded two versions. Prince later sang it as an outtake in 1987 from a man's point of view. The original Prince guide vocal for If I Love U 2 Nite appeared by mistake on the rare Mica Paris Stand for Love EP, of which only a handful exist. Mayte's version became her biggest hit and a fan favorite due to her shy, cute pop sound, contrasting with the soul sound of other versions. Chapman and Prince both performed the song as a ballad. The single was released in multiple formats in Europe: CD #1 included the Radio Edit, Album Version, Spanish version, and The Rhythm of Your Heart; CD #2 (The Remixes) featured the Album Version, Lil' Cash Mix, Displacement Mix, and Tweakin' Dub; and a cassette single contained the Radio Edit and The Rhythm of Your Heart.
