Two strangers independently agree to become secret agents for a mysterious organization, living undercover as a married couple using the aliases John and Jane Smith. The series focuses on their developing relationship and espionage skills across various locales.
Production
A TV series reboot was announced on February 12, 2021, created by and starring Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Francesca Sloane as co-creator and showrunner, set for a 2022 premiere on Prime Video. Waller-Bridge exited in September 2021 due to creative differences with Glover, and Maya Erskine replaced her on April 7, 2022. Guest stars Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano were reported on June 29, 2022; Parker Posey and Wagner Moura joined in recurring roles on September 22, 2022. Executive producers included Yariv Milchan, Arnon Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, Hiro Murai, Nate Matteson, and Jenny Robins. Filming began in summer 2022. The series was renewed for a second season on May 14, 2024, with Sloane returning as showrunner, though whether Glover and Erskine would return was unclear. Mark Eydelshteyn was cast for season two on December 6, 2024; Sophie Thatcher was in talks on February 14, 2025. On July 2, 2025, season two was set to film in Los Angeles. Production was postponed in September 2025 due to cast issues, and during the delay Sloane's overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios ended. Anna Ouyang Moench was hired as showrunner for season two as production prepared to resume in early 2026 to preserve a California tax credit. In April 2026, production began with Talia Ryder replacing Thatcher, who left due to scheduling conflicts with Yellowjackets' final season. On May 19, 2026, Francesca Scorsese joined the cast and Glover was set to direct multiple episodes. In June 2026, Matt Rogers and Levon Hawke were added to the cast.
Marketing
To promote the series, the marketing team used a series of guerrilla stunts. At an art exhibit on January 19, 2024, a pair of shoes vanished during a blackout. A few days later, two people in furry costumes sat next to Tyra Banks at a basketball game. Then, on January 25, two strangers stormed the stage during a Mark Normand comedy show. Social media posts about these incidents included ad disclaimers but never named the product. Gothamist reported that the marketing firm Verb had posted casting calls for a “HiHi Mission Contest” at a New York City cultural event. The comedy club confirmed the show was a HiHi taping that influencers were invited to.
Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 91% approval rating with an average rating of 7.6/10 based on 119 critic reviews. The critics consensus states: "Building on the basic premise of its source material, Mr. & Mrs. Smith anchors its spy hijinks in a relationship drama fueled by the chemistry between its charming leads." On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 76 out of 100 based on 38 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews." On February 9, 2024, it was announced the series became one of Prime Video's top five new series debuts ever in total U.S. viewers.
