Production

Disney+ gave the green light to an eight-episode series adapted from R. L. Stine's Just Beyond graphic novels in early May 2020. Seth Grahame-Smith was brought on to write and executive produce, with David Katzenberg, Stephen Christy, and Ross Richie also executive producing, while Stine served as co-executive producer. KatzSmith Productions and 20th Century Fox Television handled production. By March 2021, filming was underway in Atlanta, with Marc Webb directing two episodes. Mckenna Grace and Lexi Underwood each starred in a separate episode, announced in April 2021, and Nasim Pedrad appeared as a guest star. The following month, Riki Lindhome, Tim Heidecker, Gabriel Bateman, and Henry Thomas joined the cast.

Reception

Rotten Tomatoes reported an 88% approval rating with an average rating of 6.7/10 based on 8 critic reviews. Joel Keller of Decider praised the sets and CGI for intensifying supernatural elements, lauded the cast performances and humor, but noted a lack of scary moments. Ashley Moulton of Common Sense Media rated the series 4 out of 5 stars, finding the protagonists positive role models and commending its approach to themes like grief. Dayna Eileen of CGMagazine rated it 7 out of 10, stating it successfully introduces horror to unfamiliar viewers and handles adolescence and spooky themes well, though some dialogue lacked interest. Tara Bennett of IGN rated it 6 out of 10, praising the cast, especially Rachel Marsh as a teen witch, but felt the series focused too much on morality rather than providing enough scares. The series was nominated for Children's Episodic, Long Form and Specials at the 2022 Writers Guild of America Awards.
