Production
Hulu ordered a limited series inspired by Natalia Grace's life in August 2022, created by Katie Robbins. Ellen Pompeo signed on to star and executive produce under her Calamity Jane banner. The series, produced by 20th Television, is told from multiple points of view. Mark Duplass was cast as Michael Barnett in March 2024; the real Barnett was the only person to sell rights to his story. Principal photography took place in Santa Clarita, California by July 2024.
Reception
TVision ranked Good American Family the sixth most-streamed series from March 17–23, 2025, and it reached number one on Hulu's "Top 15 Today" list on March 25. Future
Ellen Pompeo told The Hollywood Reporter that the story of Kristine Barnett was complete, but conversations with Hulu about the show's future began shortly after the finale. Options included extending the narrative or transitioning to an anthology format. Pompeo expressed interest in the anthology approach and said she would likely not return as an actor but would remain a producer. In August 2026, the series was renewed for a second season focusing on Lorena Bobbitt.
