Format
The Jeselnik Offensive blends late-night comedy with a podcast format. Jeselnik begins each episode with a monologue using dark humor to discuss tragic news. Later segments might feature a pre-taped comedy bit or an interactive game like "Which Kind of Asian Is This?" A regular segment called "Sacred Cow" picks a taboo subject—such as cancer, bullying, or missing children—and makes jokes about it. Two guest panelists then join to offer their own twisted commentary on current events. The show ends with "Defend Your Tweet," where Jeselnik confronts each panelist with an old tweet they wrote. To close, Jeselnik highlights fake "Best Moments" from the episode and signs off by saying, "Good night, kids, go read a book." The series was taped live at Hollywood Center Studios in Los Angeles.
History
Comedy Central sought a half-hour, four-nights-a-week show following The Colbert Report titled Midnight. Jeselnik's main draw was the monologue, where he felt he could tell jokes he was unable to do on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where he worked in 2009. For the pilot, Jeselnik did a test interview with a celebrity but felt it fit him like a bad suit. For the first episode, Jeselnik performed cancer-related standup for a cancer support group, fighting with Comedy Central to include it as the opening sketch.
The network felt uneasy using it as an introduction, but Jeselnik pointed to the premiere episode of Chappelle's Show as an edgy precedent. The sketch opened the first episode and received positive reception, including a call from Jay Leno. Season 2 premiered July 9. Jeselnik later revealed in his Netflix special "Thoughts and Prayers" that Comedy Central threatened to cancel the show after he made a joke about the Boston Marathon bombing on his Twitter account the day it happened.
