Production

The show's celebrity guests either played themselves or took on characters, with many reprising roles from the podcast, including Don Dimello (Andy Daly), El Chupacabra (Nick Kroll), Bob Ducca (Seth Morris), Lil' Gary (Thomas Lennon), Huell Howser (James Adomian), and Cake Boss (Paul F. Tompkins). Frequent contributors included former Mr. Show with Bob and David cast members Paul F. Tompkins, Bob Odenkirk, and David Cross. Reggie Watts acted as the one-man bandleader until he left partway through the fourth season; he later became bandleader for The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Kid Cudi then took over as bandleader and sidekick for the rest of season four, with his last episode airing on December 10, 2015. The series was picked up for a 20-episode fifth season on May 5, 2015, and "Weird Al" Yankovic became the bandleader for that season, which started on June 3, 2016. The talk show was set in one-third of a wooden shack decorated with modern items, surreal pop-art, taxidermy, old books without dust-covers, and houseplants. Several objects could speak, including the taxidermy, houseplants, and a couch named Sir Couchley.
