Each episode of Join or Die with Craig Ferguson tackled a different question, like what was the worst medical idea in history, the biggest political blunder, the most influential drug, the most influential band, the greatest Founding Father, or history's biggest frenemies. Ferguson sat down with a panel of three guests, typically scholars, comedians, or people he had talked to, liked, and respected during his time hosting The Late Late Show. Together they debated six candidates for the title in a funny way.

Viewers could vote on Twitter for their favorite, and after the panel narrowed the list to two, the studio audience picked the winner by a simple majority. Every episode opened with a humorous monologue from Ferguson, and the first thirteen episodes also closed with a more thoughtful one where he loosened up on set, taking off his suit jacket, vest, and tie. In a February 24, 2016 interview on Larry King Now, Ferguson told Larry King that twenty-two episodes had already been made and that the History Channel had ordered more.

But on March 31, 2017, during Ferguson's own Sirius XM radio show with King as a guest, he said the show had been cancelled. The season's final episode, titled "History's Biggest Douchebag," was originally scheduled for June 16, 2016, but was pulled from that day's lineup. It eventually aired on July 28, 2016 on History Canada.
