Characters

The main characters are the bunny siblings Max and Ruby. Max, the younger brother, starts at three and a half years old and later turns four. He has white fur and often wears long overalls. In the first few seasons, Max typically says only one to three words per episode, with a few exceptions like "Max's Bedtime" and "Ruby's Candy Store."

He also provides voiceover on the title card for episodes that focus on Ruby. By seasons six and seven, Max can speak in full sentences. His voice actors have included Billy Rosemberg, Tyler Stevenson, and Gavin MacIver-Wright. Ruby, the older sister, is seven and later eight years old.

She is a white bunny with a level-headed personality and belongs to the bunny scouts, a group similar to the Girl Scouts. Her voice has been provided by Samantha Morton, Rebecca Peters, and Lana Carillo. Ruby’s best friend is Louise, a tan-furred bunny voiced by Julie Lemieux, who also voices Baby Huffington, Grace, and Oliver. Louise has a little cousin named Morris.

The parents are Mommy Bunny, also called Mrs. Bunny, and Daddy Bunny, also called Mr. Bunny. Mommy Bunny trusts Ruby to help care for Max. Grandma Bunny, with grey fur, is the paternal grandmother. Mrs. Rachel Huffington is the wife of Mr. Huffington, mother of Baby Huffington, and sister of the Bunny Scout Leader.

Production

Nelvana Limited and Silver Lining Entertainment Limited co-produced the first five seasons. In 2005, Silver Lining was acquired by Chorion. From season 3, 9 Story Media Group took over animation production from Nelvana, continuing through seasons 4 and 5 while Chorion co-produced. After Chorion and Silver Lining closed after season 5, Nelvana became sole producer and outsourced animation to Atomic Cartoons. Season 6 premiered on September 18, 2016, with a new main voice cast, an updated theme song, and episodes consisting of two 11-minute segments instead of three 7-minute segments. Rosemary Wells stated that the parents were unseen in earlier seasons because she believes children resolve conflicts differently when on their own; the sixth season introduced Max and Ruby's parents Mr. and Mrs. Bunny.

Telecast and home media

In the United States, the series aired on Nick Jr. starting August 26, 2002, and later on Noggin from August 16, 2004. A British English dub aired on Nick Jr. in the UK and Ireland from March 31, 2003. Paramount Home Entertainment distributes DVDs in the United States on behalf of Nickelodeon; as of March 29, 2012, 2.9 million DVD units had been sold. These DVDs contain episodes only from the first five seasons.
