Cerebrate

Zerg brood commanders serving the Overmind.

Cerebrates are a type of Zerg creature that serve as secondary commanders within the Swarm, each controlling a specific brood. They are notable for their role in the Zerg hierarchy, acting as intermediaries between the Overmind and lesser Zerg organisms.

Casting and design

The characters and story of the StarCraft series were created by Chris Metzen and James Phinney. Chris Metzen alone is credited for the plot development of the expansion Brood War. Concept art for characters and units was developed by Metzen and Samwise Didier, with additional concept art for StarCraft II by Glenn Rane and Peter Lee. Voice actors for the series, such as Robert Clotworthy and Glynnis Talken Campbell, recorded their lines over a few days in sessions of up to four hours. Clotworthy noted that concept art was used to develop his character's personality. Novel authors were influenced by Metzen, Andy Chambers, and Evelyn Fredericksen in character development.

Main characters

Jim Raynor is the primary Terran protagonist and player character, having participated in all critical plot points except one. He is the only character to have established inter-species alliance. A former colonial marshal on Mar Sara, Raynor joined Arcturus Mengsk's revolutionaries and developed a relationship with Sarah Kerrigan. He fought alongside Protoss templar Tassadar in the battle that led to the Overmind's fall and splintered the Zerg. Later, Raynor allied with Mengsk and Kerrigan to repel the United Earth Directorate invasion.

Terran characters

Terrans are descended from survivors of a 23rd century colonization mission from Earth. They are technologically inferior to Protoss and Zerg, lack genetic diversity, and are highly factionalized, but possess psionic potential. The seven dominant Terran governments include the Moebius Foundation, Kel-Morian Combine, Tarsonis Republic, Mar Sara Republic, Terran Dominion, Umojan Protectorate, and United Earth Directorate. Terrans face constant conflict from alien species and internal strife. Matt Horner, captain of the Raiders' flagship Hyperion and Raynor's second-in-command, is described as young and idealistic. Originally a Mengsk supporter, Horner became disgusted by attacks on civilian targets and followed Raynor. He is an average personal combatant but an excellent pilot and tactician. Horner commanded the Hyperion during a Zerg attack on Char, later returning to evacuate survivors. In Wings of Liberty, he acted as Raynor's conscience. By Legacy of the Void, Horner was an admiral commanding the Dominion fleet.
