Samir Duran
A Zerg character from the StarCraft series.
Samir Duran is a character from the military science fiction series StarCraft, appearing within the context of the Zerg species. He is notable for his role in the interstellar conflicts among the Terrans, Protoss, and Zerg, though his specific affiliations and actions are not detailed in the reference material.
Casting and design
The characters and story of the StarCraft series were created by Chris Metzen and James Phinney, with Metzen alone credited for the plot of StarCraft: Brood War. Visual development of characters and units came from artwork by Metzen and Samwise Didier, with additional concept art for StarCraft II by Glenn Rane and Peter Lee. Interviews with voice actors Robert Clotworthy and Glynnis Talken Campbell indicated that voicing sessions were completed over a few days in up to four-hour blocks. Clotworthy used concept art to develop his character's personality. Novel authors noted that character development was influenced by Metzen, Andy Chambers, and Evelyn Fredericksen, particularly for characters later appearing in the games, such as Valerian Mengsk.
Main characters
Jim Raynor is the primary Terran protagonist and player character, having participated in all critical plot points except one. He is the only character to establish inter-species alliances. A former colonial marshal on Mar Sara, Raynor joined Arcturus Mengsk's revolutionaries against the Terran Confederacy and developed a relationship with Sarah Kerrigan. He later fought alongside Protoss templar Tassadar in the battle that fell the Overmind and splintered the Zerg. When the United Earth Directorate arrived, Raynor, Mengsk, and Kerrigan combined their forces to repel the invasion before the alliance shattered.
Terran characters
The Terrans of the Koprulu sector descend from survivors of a 23rd century colonization mission from Earth. They are technologically inferior to the Protoss and Zerg, lacking genetic diversity and highly factionalized, but possess psionic potential. The seven dominant Terran government factions are the Moebius Foundation, the Kel-Morian Combine, the Tarsonis Republic, the Mar Sara Republic, the Terran Dominion (formerly the Terran Confederacy), the Umojan Protectorate, and the United Earth Directorate. Terrans endure constant conflict, including political assassinations, civil wars, and revolutions. Matt Horner, voiced by Brian Bloom, is captain of the Raiders' flagship Hyperion and Raynor's second-in-command. Described as young and idealistic, Horner originally supported Mengsk but became disgusted by his attacks on civilian targets. He followed Raynor after he abandoned Mengsk. Horner is an average combatant but an excellent pilot and tactician. First introduced in the novel Queen of Blades, he commanded the Hyperion under attack on Char and later returned to evacuate survivors. In Wings of Liberty, he acted as Raynor's conscience. In Legacy of the Void, he became an admiral commanding the Dominion fleet, joining the joint Dominion/protoss defense against Amon.
