The Dutton Family

Owners of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest cattle ranch in Montana, across five series.

The Dutton family are the owners of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest cattle ranch in Montana, and the centre of the Yellowstone franchise (sometimes called the Duttonverse). The family drama at the ranch, and its borders with the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, Yellowstone National Park and land developers, drives the main series (2018-2024), the prequels 1883 and 1923, a sequel series and a spin-off.

Lore & Background

In the main series John Dutton's children are Lee, the oldest son and head of ranch security; Jamie; Beth, a financier and the only daughter; and Kayce, a former Navy SEAL and the youngest son. Their mother Evelyn died in a horse-riding accident. 1883 follows the post-Civil War generation, James and Margaret Dutton, who leave Tennessee and join a wagon train to the land that became the ranch; 1923 follows a later generation through Prohibition, drought and the early Depression. James is John Dutton III's great-grandfather, Spencer his grandfather and Jacob his great-great-uncle.
