Ryuji Goda
The Dragon of Kansai who demands to be the only dragon left standing.
Ryuji Goda is the patriarch of the Go-Ryu Clan, a powerful subsidiary of the Omi Alliance based in Osaka. The adoptive son of Jin Goda, the alliance chairman, he bears the nickname "Dragon of Kansai" due to his golden dragon tattoo, though he rejects the title, insisting there can be only one true dragon in Japan. This belief drives his primary goal in Yakuza 2: to defeat Kazuma Kiryu, the "Dragon of Dojima." Voiced by Masami Iwasaki, Goda is defined by his arrogance, violence, and enigmatic nature. He orchestrates chaos in Kamurochō to force a war between the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance, viewing Kiryu as his sole worthy rival.

Lore & Background
Goda's story begins with a conspiracy to create chaos in Kamurochō. He is introduced drinking in Sōtenbori, where he assaults a henchman for calling him the "Dragon of Kansai." As the adoptive son of Jin Goda, he stages a coup at the Omi Alliance headquarters, kidnapping Daigo Dojima and later killing a stand-in disguised as his adoptive father's corpse as part of a ruse to ignite conflict between the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance. His primary goal is to prove himself as the one true dragon by defeating Kiryu; he collaborates with the Jingweon but later claims to hate their agenda.
At the Jingweon Mansion, he kills Terada. In the climax at unfinished Kamurocho Hills, he is shot by Takashima's men and then kills Takashima by stabbing him with a sword. He then faces Kiryu in a final showdown. Rejecting Sayama's protests that they will die from wounds or an explosion, they exchange cross-counters, ending with Goda dying in Kiryu's arms, not Kaoru's.
Reader's Guide
Developers designed Goda as an overwhelmingly powerful antagonist to make players doubt their ability to win through raw strength or organizational power. His personality is described by Kazunobu Takeuchi as arrogant, violent, and enigmatic. Visually, he carries a Japanese sword and features a tattoo by artist Kazuaki Kitamura. For Dead Souls, his design was updated with a metal prosthetic right arm and a portable gatling gun. Voice actor Masami Iwasaki stated in a 2019 Tokyo Game Show Q&A that he rarely gets roles he truly wants but fought to play Goda, citing the character's "manly, brawny" appeal. Producer Toshihiro Nagoshi acknowledged fan demand for Goda's return after his canonical death, leading to his role as a playable character in Dead Souls and later as the protagonist of a story arc in Ryu ga Gotoku ONLINE released in March 2020.
Did You Know?
- Goda's tattoo was designed by Kazuaki Kitamura, a Japanese artist better known as Horitomo.
- In Dead Souls, Goda learns from his mentor that dispatching an opponent in one blow is an act of compassion to prevent needless suffering.
- An adolescent Goda appears in Yakuza 0 as the "Bontan Hunter," stealing pants from high school students.
Design Philosophy and Visual Evolution
Goda was conceived to be an antagonist so strong that players question if they can win against his raw power. Described by Kazunobu Takeuchi as arrogant and enigmatic, he rarely discloses true feelings. His initial design includes a Japanese sword and a tattoo by Kazuaki Kitamura. In Yakuza: Dead Souls, the alternate timeline version features a metal prosthetic right arm and a portable gatling gun. Producer Toshihiro Nagoshi noted Goda's "manly, brawny" appeal as a rival character with a powerful aura drove his inclusion as a playable character in 2010.
Narrative Depth in Alternate Timelines
In Yakuza: Dead Souls, an alternate timeline allows Goda to survive his canonical death. Expelled from the Omi Alliance, he becomes a takoyaki apprentice under "Oyassan," who teaches him that killing quickly is compassionate. This arc explores Goda's conflict between his criminal past and desire for a legitimate future. Voice actor Renji Ishibashi noted that while young Goda was not the violent boss he became, he embraced the role because it felt right. The story tests his resolve as the underworld pulls him back in, focusing on two men trying to move on from difficult pasts.
Enduring Legacy and Fan Reception
Goda is widely considered one of the best villains in the franchise, with Yakuza 2 and its remake cited as series highlights. Despite dying in 2006's Yakuza 2, his popularity led to recurring appearances, including a playable role in Dead Souls (announced August 18, 2010) and a protagonist arc in Ryu ga Gotoku ONLINE (March 2020). Masami Iwasaki expressed deep fondness for the character, noting it was a rare role he actively sought. Developers use his enduring status as Kiryu's most impressive rival to create fan service, exploring his backstory further in games like Yakuza: Like a Dragon Gaiden (2023), where his battle with Kiryu is recreated.
