Kazuma Kiryu

The Dragon of Dojima: A yakuza who traded ten years of freedom for the woman and friend he loved.

Kazuma Kiryu is the initial main protagonist of Sega's action-adventure beat 'em up franchise Yakuza / Like a Dragon. Popularly known as "the Dragon of Dojima," this moniker stems from the dragon tattoo on his back and his origins in the Dojima Family, a subsidiary of the Tojo Clan. Introduced in the 2005 debut game, Kiryu took the blame for the murder of Sohei Dojima to protect both Yumi Sawamura and his best friend Akira Nishikiyama, who was the actual killer, resulting in his expulsion from the clan and a ten-year prison sentence. After leaving prison, he fights new threats and meets Haruka Sawamura, eventually becoming her legal guardian (she calls him 'uncle'; they are not legally adopted). Voiced by Takaya Kuroda in Japanese, Kiryu has appeared in three live-action projects and various crossover games.

Lore & Background

Kiryu's story began when he accepted responsibility for the murder of Sohei Dojima to shield both Yumi Sawamura and his best friend Nishikiyama, who was the actual killer, leading to a decade-long incarceration. Upon release, he navigated threats while caring for Haruka Sawamura. In Yakuza 3, he attempted to live a "more 'human' life" by running an orphanage, though staff initially saw him as intimidating or strict, not too kind. The narrative evolved from him being the sole playable character in the first three games to sharing roles in subsequent titles like Yakuza 4 and 5, where he worked as a taxi driver in a new city.

In Yakuza 0, a prequel, his traits were adjusted to a "loose-cannon hot-head" to surprise fans before maturing across the storyline. While Ichiban Kasuga became the protagonist of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Kiryu appeared as a supporting character with an untold backstory later explained in Gaiden. His final journey occurs in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, where he is one of two main protagonists alongside Kasuga.

Reader's Guide

Kiryu is voiced by Takaya Kuroda in Japanese. English voice actors include Darryl Kurylo (2005, 2020) and Yong Yea (2023–present). Beyond the main series, he appears in two films, a television series, Project X Zone 2, and as downloadable content in Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. Development-wise, scenario editor Hase Seishu revised Kiryu's age to ensure his rank was realistic for his years. While Nagoshi refrained from calling him the protagonist initially due to Haruka's arc, he became the sole playable character until Yakuza 4. Designer Ryosuke Horii introduced minigames like karaoke and fishing to show a cooler side of Kiryu, overcoming initial staff concerns that such activities were out of character. Kuroda described Kiryu as a "true shy character" who could not form a formal romantic relationship with Kaoru Sayama in Yakuza 2 due to his self-perception.

The Dragon of Dojima: Origins and Identity

Kazuma Kiryu is the central figure of the franchise, known as "the Dragon of Dojima" (堂島の龍) because of his back tattoo and history with the Dojima Family. Created by producer Toshihiro Nagoshi to appeal to a broad audience, he was conceived as a modern version of a typical Japanese hero inspired by traditional "Ninkyo" movies. His introduction in 2005 established his defining moment: taking the blame for his boss's death to protect sworn-brother Akira Nishikiyama. This act led to his expulsion and ten years in prison. In Yakuza 0, which serves as a prequel, Kiryu was portrayed as a "loose-cannon hot-head," a departure from his usual stoicism that surprised long-time fans before he matured through the storyline.

The Evolution of a Modern Samurai

Kiryu's development focused on balancing his "indestructible" reputation with humanizing traits. While initially the sole playable character for three games, his role shifted in Yakuza 4 and 5 to include other protagonists. In Yakuza 4, he was made the last playable character after three new ones, emphasizing his unique traits. For Yakuza 5, he worked as a taxi driver in a city where no one knew him. The team also expanded minigames; designer Ryosuke Horii argued that activities like karaoke and fishing would make Kiryu appear cooler rather than just a "permanently frowning man." This idea was approved by Nagoshi. In Yakuza 3, the inclusion of an orphanage subplot was rewritten multiple times because writer Masayoshi Yokoyama feared it made Kiryu too kind.

Fatherhood and the Quest for Humanity

A core element of Kiryu's development is his relationship with Haruka Sawamura. Producer Nagoshi stated that following Yakuza 2, he wanted Kiryu to live a "more 'human' life" throughout Yakuza 3, where he runs an orphanage. This narrative choice was central to the game's focus on family relationships after years of separation between Kiryu and Haruka in Yakuza 6. Voice actor Takaya Kuroda described Kiryu as a shy character who could not pursue romance with Kaoru Sayama in Yakuza 2 due to his self-perception. Despite these soft moments, the staff ensured his core identity remained intact even when he was no longer the sole protagonist.

Legacy, Reception, and Final Chapters

Kazuma Kiryu has garnered widespread critical acclaim for subverting the typical yakuza trope; despite his criminal history, he is celebrated for his inherent kindness and profound character development. His voice acting, provided by Takaya Kuroda in Japanese and various actors in English, further cements his iconic status across media, including live-action films and television series. While the eighth main installment introduced a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, Kiryu remained a vital supporting figure before returning as the lead in spin-offs like 'Like a Dragon Gaiden.'

His journey culminates in 'Infinite Wealth,' where he faces a terminal cancer diagnosis with only months to live, marking his final adventure. Throughout this extensive saga, Kiryu has appeared in crossover titles and downloadable content, solidifying his place in gaming history. The narrative trajectory from the sole hero of the early games to a supporting mentor figure reflects the natural progression of his life story, offering fans a poignant conclusion to the legend of the Dragon of Dojima.

Legacy, Reception and Final Chapters

Critical reception has been generally positive, with critics praising Kiryu's kindness despite his yakuza history. His story concluded in Yakuza 6, but he returned as a supporting character in Yakuza: Like a Dragon before starring in the spin-off Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. In Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, he serves as one of two main protagonists alongside Ichiban Kasuga. This marks his final journey; the source states he now has cancer and has merely months to live. For this installment, his design was updated to show weight loss and aging signs, reflecting his lower health status.
