Wrestling at the 2024 Summer Olympics
Wrestling at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The wrestling events at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place from August 5 to 11 at the Grand Palais Éphémère on the Champ de Mars in Paris. A total of 288 athletes participated across 18 weight classes. Men competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines, while women wrestled only in freestyle. Eighteen gold medals were awarded. Wrestling has been part of every modern Olympic Games except for the 1900 edition in Paris.
In the Greco-Roman 130 kg division, Mijaín López made history by becoming the first athlete in the modern Olympic era to win five consecutive gold medals in the same individual event. Japan finished at the top of the medal table for the fourth time.
Each weight division featured 16 wrestlers. The tournament used a single-elimination format with a repechage system to determine the two bronze medalists. The two finalists competed for gold and silver. Any wrestler who lost to one of the finalists entered the repechage, which culminated in two bronze medal matches: the semifinal losers each faced the remaining repechage opponent from their half of the bracket.
Qualification for Paris 2024 mirrored the previous Games, with 288 quota spots available through three phases. Each National Olympic Committee could qualify only one wrestler per weight class, and no host country spots were allocated. The qualification period began at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia (September 16–24), where five quota places per weight category were awarded to the gold, silver, and two bronze medalists, plus the winner of a bout between two losers from the bronze medal matches. In early 2024, four continental qualification tournaments (Asia, Europe, the Americas, and a joint Africa & Oceania event) distributed 144 spots to the top two finalists in each weight class. The remaining quotas were decided at the 2024 World Qualification Tournament, which offered three spots per weight category to the two highest-ranked wrestlers and the winner of a wrestle-off between two bronze medalists.
During the 2024 European Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan, Italian wrestler Frank Chamizo claimed he was offered a $300,000 bribe to lose to Azerbaijani Turan Bayramov, an offer he refused. After a controversial referee decision gave Bayramov the win on criteria, Chamizo accused the referee of match fixing.

Reader's Guide
Mijaín López became the first and only athlete in modern Olympics history to win five consecutive gold medals in the same individual event, achieving this in Greco-Roman wrestling 130 kg. Japan topped the medal table for the fourth time. A notable controversy arose during the 2024 European Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Baku, where Italian wrestler Frank Chamizo alleged he was offered a $300,000 bribe to lose to Azerbaijani Turan Bayramov. After a disputed referee decision, the refereeing body was suspended by the UWW, though the result could not be changed due to policy. Chamizo later qualified by ranking after spots were redistributed due to denial of athletes from Russia and Belarus.
