Chinese-born American computer scientist who established ImageNet.
Fei-Fei Li (born July 3, 1976) is a Chinese-born American computer scientist and a professor at Stanford University. She is best known for creating ImageNet, a large-scale visual database that fueled major breakthroughs in computer vision during the 2010s. Her research spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and cognitive neuroscience, and she has been referred to as "The Godmother of AI."
Li co-directs the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the Stanford Vision and Learning Lab. She served as Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud and directed the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 2013 to 2018. In 2017, she co-founded AI4ALL, a nonprofit aimed at increasing diversity in AI. In 2023, she was named to the Time 100 AI Most Influential People list.
Her honors include the Intel Lifetime Achievements Innovation Award (2017) and election to the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine (2020), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2021). In 2025, she was named one of Time's "Architects of AI" for Person of the Year. In 2023, she was appointed to the United Nations Scientific Advisory Board. In 2024, she was included on Gold House's most influential Asian A100 list. That same year, she raised $230 million for World Labs, a startup she co-founded to develop "spatial intelligence" AI that understands the three-dimensional physical world. In 2026, World Labs raised $1 billion.
Li was born in Beijing in 1976 and grew up in Chengdu, Sichuan, attending Sichuan Chengdu No.7 High School. Her father immigrated to Parsippany, New Jersey, when she was 12; she and her mother joined him at age 16. While at Parsippany High School, she worked weekends at the family dry-cleaning shop, graduating in 1995. She was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 2017. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics from Princeton University in 1999, completing a senior thesis on auditory binaural correlogram differences under Bradley Dickinson. During college, she often returned home on weekends to help run the dry-cleaning business and worked as a dishwasher. She earned a Master of Science (2001) and a Ph.D. (2005) in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, with a dissertation on visual recognition supervised by Pietro Perona and Christof Koch.
