Gameplay

In Wild Earth, players take on the role of a photojournalist in Serengeti National Park, snapping pictures of 30 African animals like hyenas and rhinos. The Wii version makes the controller vibrate when you get too close to wildlife, which shakes up the camera. The game also became a motion simulator ride at places like the Philadelphia Zoo, Zoo Miami, and San Diego Zoo.

Development

Super X Studios, a Seattle-based indie developer, created Wild Earth for Windows and planned an Xbox release, but the console version was scrapped around 2005 or early 2006. The studio had previously won the Independent Games Festival audience award in 2000 for Far Gate, and in 2003 they took home the grand prize, along with awards for game design and visual art innovation. Production wrapped by December 2005, but their deal with British publisher Digital Jesters fell through due to that company's restructuring. The game launched online in 2006, with Akella releasing it on September 18 and Ubisoft on November 16. A partnership with Discovery Channel and Animal Planet led to a European release by Xplosiv on April 5, 2007. In 2008, Majesco published a Wii version called Wild Earth: African Safari. The game returned to Steam as Wild Earth - Africa in March 2022.
