Nomad of Nowhere

Nomad of Nowhere is an American animated web series that premiered on Rooster Teeth’s website on March 9, 2018. The show, created by Georden Whitman, blends western and fantasy genres. It follows a mute wanderer who is pursued because he can use magic to bring inanimate objects to life.

The story centers on the Nomad, a scarecrow animated by magic who does not speak. He can give life to plants and objects, though he never demonstrates any other magical abilities. Despite being labeled dangerous by characters like Red Manuel and Captain Toth, he is kind and friendly. He roams a western fantasy realm ruled by the evil king El Rey, hunted by bounty hunters and other enemies.

Captain Toth, voiced by Kdin Jenzen, leads a bounty hunting group called the Dandy Lions and answers to the arrogant Don Paragon. She may have romantic feelings for her assistant, Skout. Series creator Georden Whitman later said the growth of Skout and Toth’s relationship was his favorite part of the story. Skout, voiced by Kdin Jenzen, is thoughtful and intelligent but often lacks self-confidence and awareness of her own strength. Her loyalty to Toth is unexplained, but she clearly has feelings for her. Series director Jordan Cwierz noted that Skout “kinda has a thing for Toth” but is shy, while director Yssa Badiola joked about their friendship or relationship on the show. Writer Miles Luna later confirmed Skout as an LGBT character.

Red Manuel, voiced by Alejandro Saab, is a self-absorbed member of Toth’s unit who is hostile toward her and Skout. He ranks below Toth but tries to compete for her position as unit leader. Don Paragon, voiced by Max Dennison, is the pompous superior of Toth and Red Manuel, styling himself as the ruler of a land called the Oasis. El Rey, voiced by John Swasey, rules the neighboring region of Nowhere. He was reportedly corrupted by magic, which led to all magic users being drained of their power—except the Nomad, who somehow survived.

Supporting characters include Jethro (Ryan Haywood), Santi (Eddy Rivas), and Nell (Stephen Fu), all members of the Dandy Lions. The show also features a large cast of residents of Bliss Hill, performers from the Twindleweed Brothers Traveling Circus, and various other characters such as a ranch hand, an undertaker, and bandits.
