Background
A San Diego native, Strasburg pitched for San Diego State and won a bronze medal with the United States at the 2008 Olympics before Washington drafted him first overall in 2009. He struck out a franchise-record 14 batters in his debut in June 2010, but tore an elbow ligament in his 12th game and needed Tommy John surgery. In 2012 the Nationals controversially shut him down after 28 games, keeping him out of their first postseason. He led the National League in strikeouts in 2014 and in wins, with 18, in 2019, and that October he made the first relief appearance of his career in the Wild Card Game before starting and winning Games 2 and 6 of the World Series. He then re-signed for seven years and $245 million, but pitched only 31 more innings in the majors.
